Slow Progress on EU Reforms Raises Concerns

A recent report reveals that the European Union has only implemented 26% of the recommendations made by former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi two years ago. This slow pace of reform is concerning, especially as the EU aims to enhance its competitiveness and independence from global powers like the US and China.

Despite the European Commission’s prioritisation of these reforms, the legislative process has been sluggish, with none of the thirty key policies fully executed. The report highlights that only 30% of the recommendations are making serious progress, raising questions about the EU’s ability to respond effectively to global challenges.

Interestingly, the report indicates that the EU tends to act more swiftly when it feels threatened, particularly in sectors like energy and defence. However, areas such as health and life sciences lag significantly, scoring only 13% despite the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the EU heads towards a deadline for key reforms by the end of the year, the urgency for political courage and decisive action becomes increasingly apparent. The outcome of these reforms will not only shape Europe’s future but also its role on the global stage.
