Spain’s Job Market Faces Seasonal Setbacks

In August, Spain’s labour market experienced a notable downturn, shedding nearly 163,000 jobs as the summer tourist season came to a close. This seasonal trend typically sees a rise in unemployment, particularly in sectors like education, which lost over 78,000 positions. Despite this, the overall unemployment rate remains at a historic low of 9.87%, the lowest since 2008, thanks in part to the regularisation of foreign workers contributing to the economy.

The increase in unemployment, while concerning, is less severe than in previous years, indicating a gradual recovery from the pandemic’s impact. The regularisation process has incorporated over 337,000 foreign workers into the Social Security system, helping to buffer the seasonal job losses. This influx has shifted the dynamics of the labour market, with foreign workers now making up 15.9% of the total workforce.

The education sector’s significant job losses highlight the vulnerability of seasonal employment, which is heavily reliant on the academic calendar. As contracts end with the summer break, many educators find themselves out of work, contributing to the spike in unemployment figures. This cyclical pattern raises questions about job security in sectors that depend on seasonal hiring.

Looking ahead, the Spanish government is optimistic about job growth, with around 680,000 jobs created year-on-year. However, the reliance on seasonal employment and the impact of foreign worker regularisation suggest that the labour market’s recovery may be uneven, requiring ongoing attention to ensure stability and growth in the future.
