St Helena Faces Isolation as RAF Dispute Threatens Air Access

St Helena, a remote British Overseas Territory, is on the brink of being cut off from air travel due to a dispute with the RAF. The conflict arises from the RAF’s refusal to allow emergency landings for civilian aircraft at Ascension Island, which serves as a backup airport. This standoff could ground weekly flights operated by Airlink, leaving the island’s 4,400 residents reliant solely on a five-day sea journey to South Africa for supplies.

The situation is particularly dire as St Helena’s harsh winter weather often prevents successful landings, with locals estimating that only one in four flights can land during these conditions. The RAF’s ban on civilian aircraft at Ascension violates a recent agreement that designated it as an alternative landing site. This could lead to significant disruptions in essential services and supplies for the islanders.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch has recommended that the Ministry of Defence clarify the status of Ascension as a diversionary airfield to prevent future issues. However, Airlink has confirmed that it can only divert to Ascension in emergencies, leaving the island vulnerable to isolation.

The implications of this dispute extend beyond logistics; it raises concerns about the geopolitical dynamics at play, with some locals speculating that U.S. military interests may influence the RAF’s decisions. As the situation unfolds, the potential for St Helena to be cut off from the outside world looms larger, threatening the island’s connectivity and livelihood.
