The Struggles of Young Job Seekers in the UK

Neala Sheils, a 20-year-old from Glasgow, faced a daunting two-year job search before finally securing employment in a hotel. Her experience highlights a troubling trend among young people in the UK, with over a million aged 16 to 24 classified as NEET—Not in Education, Employment, or Training. This group often feels disconnected from the job market, with many not actively seeking work due to various barriers, including mental health challenges.

Neala’s journey underscores the inadequacies of support systems, as she struggled with inconsistent guidance from the Jobcentre. It wasn’t until she accessed a specialist employability service that her situation began to improve. This service, provided by the mental health charity SAMH, focused on building her confidence and addressing her autism-related challenges, which had previously hindered her job prospects.

The issue of NEET youth is particularly pronounced in Scotland, where data tracking for those aged 20 to 24 is less transparent. Economists express concern that without clear statistics, understanding the true extent of the problem remains difficult. This age group is crucial as they transition from education to employment, often facing increased unemployment risks.

Experts argue that mental health issues are a significant factor contributing to the rise in NEET figures. With mental health problems doubling in the last decade, young people are increasingly struggling with anxiety and depression, which can adversely affect their qualifications and confidence. Addressing these challenges is essential for improving employment outcomes for the next generation.
