Suffolk County Council is considering a £1.35 million investment to develop a business case for improving the A140 junction at Earl Stonham. This junction, which connects with the A1120, is notorious for heavy congestion, particularly during peak hours, leading to longer travel times and increased emissions that affect local air quality.
The proposed improvements could involve realigning the eastern arm of the A1120 or constructing a new link road to divert traffic away from residential areas. This plan aims not only to ease congestion but also to enhance the local economy by reducing travel delays.
If the council approves the funding, the full business case could be ready by the end of this financial year, with construction potentially starting in summer 2028. The government has indicated it may cover up to 85% of the project’s costs, which total around £6.46 million.
This upgrade is significant for local residents, as it promises to alleviate traffic woes and improve air quality, ultimately benefiting both daily commuters and the broader community.
