Summer Getaway: Millions Hit the Roads Amid New Border Checks

As schools break for summer, over six million drivers are expected to embark on road trips across the UK. This surge in travel coincides with the implementation of new EU border checks, which could impact journey times at key ports like Dover. The Port of Dover is preparing for a busy weekend, having learned from previous delays during peak travel times.

The new Entry Exit System requires UK travellers to have their fingerprints and photographs taken when entering the Schengen Area. While this process is typically managed at airports, it will also affect those travelling via ferry or Eurotunnel. This could lead to longer wait times at border crossings, particularly during busy holiday periods.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys carefully, considering alternative travel times to avoid congestion. The AA has noted that while the initial rush may have passed, holiday traffic will remain high throughout the summer, with families spreading their trips over several weeks.

With temperatures expected to rise, the combination of good weather and increased travel could lead to significant delays. Authorities are urging drivers to remain patient and prepared for potential holdups as they head out for their summer adventures.
