Surge in Guinea Pig Donations Highlights Owner Responsibility

The RSPCA has reported a staggering 70% increase in guinea pigs being donated to their centres, attributed to over-breeding and a lack of owner knowledge. This trend raises concerns about animal welfare and the responsibilities of pet ownership, particularly during the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Many of these guinea pigs come from overcrowded homes where they have suffered from poor conditions and minimal human interaction. The charity has noted a significant rise in reports of cruelty, with some homes housing hundreds of animals, indicating a pressing need for better education on pet care.

Guinea pigs, while generally mild and sociable, require proper environments, diets, and companionship to thrive. The RSPCA emphasizes that these pets should never be kept alone and should be neutered to prevent unwanted litters. This situation not only affects the animals but also reflects broader societal issues regarding responsible pet ownership.

As the summer months approach, the RSPCA anticipates a busy season for rehoming these animals. Their campaign, “Cruelty Hurts, Love Rescues,” aims to combat the trend of abandonment and promote better care practices among current and prospective guinea pig owners.
