Surge in Migrant Homelessness Sparks Concerns in Britain

Britain is witnessing a significant rise in migrant homelessness, a trend not seen for years. The Institute for Public Policy Research (IPPR) has highlighted that Labour’s efforts to expedite asylum decisions are inadvertently pushing many refugees onto the streets. As the backlog decreases, successful asylum seekers are often left without adequate time to secure housing or benefits, leading to a concerning spike in homelessness cases.

Recent data indicates that homelessness cases linked to asylum accommodation have more than doubled in just one quarter, rising from 3,450 to 7,160 between July and December 2023. This alarming trend underscores a potential crisis, with the IPPR warning that without proper support mechanisms, the situation could worsen. The report suggests that many migrants are becoming homeless immediately after leaving their accommodation, highlighting a critical gap in the system.

The IPPR advocates for a ‘safe move-on guarantee’ to ensure that asylum seekers receive adequate notice and support before their accommodation ends. This includes a proposed 42-day notice period and improved coordination with local councils to facilitate smoother transitions. The think tank’s findings reveal that the number of non-UK nationals sleeping rough has surged by 92% since 2021, with even higher increases among non-EU nationals.

As the government continues to reform the asylum system, the IPPR emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach to prevent further homelessness. The current situation reflects a broader issue of systemic gaps between immigration and housing policies, necessitating urgent attention to avoid a repeat of past crises.
