Surge in Onshore Windfarm Applications Signals Renewable Energy Shift

The number of onshore windfarm applications in England has surged to its highest level in a decade, following the Labour government’s decision to lift a de facto ban on such developments. This change has led to approximately 45 new proposals submitted in the year leading up to March, marking a significant increase in renewable energy initiatives.

Before the ban was lifted, applications were averaging just 1 megawatt per month, but this figure has now jumped to around 36 megawatts monthly. This resurgence is crucial as it not only enhances energy security but also promises economic benefits, such as job creation and lower energy bills for households.

Despite the growth, the scale of proposed windfarms in England remains modest compared to Scotland, where larger projects are more common. The average proposed windfarm in England now features just two turbines, generating 8 megawatts of capacity, compared to Scotland’s nine turbines and 59 megawatts.

The implications of this trend are profound. As the UK aims to bolster its renewable energy supply, the onshore wind sector could contribute significantly to the economy, potentially adding £56 billion by 2050. This shift not only addresses immediate energy needs but also fosters long-term sustainability and community investment, making it a pivotal moment for the UK’s energy landscape.
