Dr Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman has been struck off after a catastrophic surgical error left a patient in severe pain and unable to use the toilet for three weeks. The incident occurred during a five-hour emergency procedure at Royal Oldham Hospital, where Dr Rahman mistakenly connected the patient’s bowel to his stomach, creating a dangerous closed loop.

This blunder not only caused immense suffering but also posed a life-threatening situation for the patient, who required a second operation to correct the mistake. The medical tribunal described Dr Rahman’s actions as among the worst surgical errors possible, highlighting a critical failure to seek assistance when needed.

The case raises significant concerns about surgical oversight and the importance of adhering to professional standards. Dr Rahman’s previous breaches of medical practice regulations further underscore the vulnerabilities within the healthcare system that could endanger patients.

As the NHS grapples with staffing shortages and increasing pressure, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of inadequate training and supervision in surgical procedures, which could have lasting impacts on patient safety and trust in medical professionals.
