Taxpayer-Funded Exhibition Claims Care Bears Are Transgender

A recent exhibition funded by Arts Council England has sparked debate by declaring that certain Care Bears characters are transgender or gender fluid. This project, named Villiers Revealed, aims to highlight what it calls ‘trans narratives erased by colonialism’ and positions the beloved toy line as a symbol for the LGBTQA+ community.

The exhibition, which began at Melton Carnegie Museum and has since moved online, focuses on the character Funshine Bear, who is portrayed as both male and female throughout the franchise’s history. Advocates argue that such representations can provide positive role models for those exploring their own gender identities.

Critics, however, question the appropriateness of applying contemporary gender identity frameworks to historical figures and characters, suggesting it risks anachronism. This trend of reinterpreting well-known figures through a queer lens has been seen in other contexts, such as claims about Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Joan of Arc.

The exhibition also addresses the impact of colonialism on gender and sexuality, asserting that it has historically suppressed queer identities, particularly among people of colour. As discussions around gender identity continue to evolve, this exhibition reflects a growing movement to re-examine cultural icons through a modern lens.
