The recent capsizing of a ferry on Lake Kariba has resulted in a devastating death toll, now confirmed at 92. This incident, occurring near the Zambian border, is believed to be the deadliest maritime disaster in Zimbabwe’s history, raising critical concerns about safety regulations and vessel capacity in the region.

Witness reports suggest that the ferry was likely overloaded, carrying as many as 153 people despite having a capacity limit of only 90. As search efforts continue, with police deploying over 40 divers and multiple boats, the recovery of more bodies is expected, highlighting the scale of the tragedy and the urgent need for improved safety measures.

Travel by ferry is common in areas such as Kariba due to inadequate road infrastructure and public transport options. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by communities reliant on such transportation methods and the potential for further disasters if safety protocols are not enforced.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has labelled the incident as “tragic,” calling attention to the systemic deficiencies in maritime safety that require immediate governmental action to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
