Two men tragically lost their lives while attempting to rescue children struggling in the sea at Seaton Carew beach in County Durham. This incident highlights the dangers associated with open water, especially during the current heatwave, which has seen many flocking to beaches and lakes.

Emergency services were alerted around 15:45 on Sunday, and while the children were safely brought to shore, the two rescuers were later retrieved from the water but sadly pronounced dead shortly after. This event serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved in water activities, particularly in hot weather when people may underestimate the dangers.

Cleveland Police have stated that the deaths are not being treated as suspicious, and investigations are ongoing. Superintendent Glen Ward expressed condolences to the families and urged the public to exercise caution around open water, especially during peak summer conditions.

As the UK experiences its third heatwave this summer, the incident underscores the need for increased awareness about water safety. Authorities are encouraging everyone to enjoy the warm weather responsibly, avoiding risky situations that could lead to tragedy.
