Trial of Former Gambian Death Squad Leader Highlights Accountability Efforts

Sanna Manjang, the former leader of the Gambian paramilitary group known as the ‘Junglers’, is currently facing military trial for desertion after fleeing the country in 2017. This trial is significant as it represents a continued effort by The Gambia to hold accountable those responsible for human rights abuses during Yahya Jammeh’s 20-year regime.

The Junglers have been implicated in numerous extrajudicial killings and torture, with the United Nations previously condemning their actions. Manjang’s trial follows the establishment of the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), which uncovered evidence of widespread abuses, including the deaths of 240 to 250 individuals under Jammeh’s rule.

While Manjang was previously charged with murder, those charges were dropped due to difficulties in summoning witnesses. This highlights the ongoing challenges The Gambia faces in achieving justice for past atrocities. The current trial focuses on his absence from the army for nine years, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s quest for accountability.

The outcome of this trial could set a precedent for future cases against other members of Jammeh’s regime, impacting how the country addresses its dark past and seeks to rebuild trust in its institutions.
