Typhoon Dolphin Disrupts Life in China with Evacuations and Flight Cancellations

Typhoon Dolphin, despite weakening, has caused significant disruptions across China, particularly in Shanghai where nearly 1,500 flights were canceled. The storm’s impact has led to the evacuation of over 300,000 people in eastern China, with authorities warning of continued heavy rainfall and potential flooding in several regions.

In Shanghai, both Pudong International and Hongqiao International airports saw a drastic reduction in flight capacity, with cancellations reaching about 60% of scheduled travel. Public transport services were also affected, with local train services suspended, highlighting the extensive reach of the typhoon’s aftermath.

The National Meteorological Centre issued severe flood alerts for parts of Zhejiang province, where the storm made landfall, and red alerts for heavy rainfall in five districts of Beijing. This situation underscores the increasing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events in China, raising concerns about climate change’s role in these natural disasters.

As the country grapples with the immediate effects of Typhoon Dolphin, the broader implications for infrastructure, public safety, and emergency preparedness are becoming increasingly evident. With scientists warning of more frequent extreme weather, the need for robust disaster response strategies is more critical than ever.
