Typhoon Dujuan’s Impact: Rising Casualties and Infrastructure Damage in Japan

Typhoon Dujuan has left a significant mark on Japan, with at least four confirmed deaths and six individuals still missing. The storm, which struck near Tokyo, has caused extensive flooding, leading to the closure of critical services and major transportation routes. As search and rescue operations continue, the potential for the death toll to rise remains a pressing concern.

The typhoon has also disrupted major events, including the early closure of a prominent video game trade fair in Tokyo. This highlights how natural disasters can affect not just local communities but also international industries and economies, particularly in a country known for its technological advancements.

In Chiba and Kanagawa, where the fatalities occurred, over 45,000 households are without power, and more than 460 homes have sustained damage. The record rainfall, with some areas receiving over 800 millimetres in just 48 hours, underscores the increasing severity of weather events, which scientists attribute to climate change.

As Japan braces for the aftermath, the broader implications of Typhoon Dujuan may resonate beyond immediate recovery efforts, prompting discussions on infrastructure resilience and climate adaptation strategies in the face of increasingly volatile weather patterns.
