Uckfield’s Historic Bonfire Procession Cancelled Amid Wildfire Risks

The Uckfield Bonfire and Carnival Society has cancelled its historic torch procession due to heightened wildfire risks. This decision, announced on September 1, follows a Government emergency declaration on August 14, which warned of increased fire hazards after prolonged dry weather. The society, which has celebrated this tradition for nearly 200 years, faced insurance issues that prevented the use of flaming torches during the event.

In lieu of the traditional flames, participants are encouraged to illuminate the streets with battery-powered lanterns and fairy lights. While the torch procession and fireworks display have been scrapped, the carnival festivities will continue, showcasing vibrant costumes from various bonfire societies across Sussex. The society has expressed gratitude for community support during this challenging adjustment.

The cancellation reflects a growing trend of prioritising safety over tradition in community events, especially as climate conditions become more unpredictable. Fellow bonfire societies have voiced their solidarity, emphasising the importance of community well-being over longstanding customs.

This shift may signal a broader change in how local events are managed in response to environmental concerns, potentially reshaping community traditions in the years to come. As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, similar cancellations could become more common, prompting communities to adapt their celebrations accordingly.
