Why UFO Sightings Often Come from Smokers at Night

A surprising number of UFO sightings can be traced back to people enjoying an evening smoke. According to Hansjürgen Köhler, a veteran UFO investigator, many reports come from individuals who are simply looking up at the night sky while on their balconies. This trend highlights a common misconception: that UFO sightings are often linked to extraordinary phenomena, when in fact, they frequently stem from misidentified ordinary objects like satellites, drones, or even bright stars.

Köhler’s research with the Central Research Network for Anomalous Phenomena (CENAP) reveals that about 40% of sightings can be attributed to space technology, including Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites, which can create confusion due to their reflective nature. As more people look to the skies, especially during meteor showers, the volume of reports increases, leading to a surge in calls to UFO hotlines.

This phenomenon underscores the importance of public education about astronomy. Many people lack the knowledge to accurately identify celestial objects, leading to unnecessary panic or excitement. Köhler advocates for better understanding of the night sky, suggesting that a simple lack of awareness can lead to widespread misinterpretation of what is actually seen.

As UFO reports continue to rise, it’s essential for the public to approach these sightings with a critical eye. Understanding the common causes behind these reports can help demystify the phenomenon and reduce the number of unnecessary calls to UFO research organisations, allowing them to focus on the truly unexplained cases.
