The UK government has officially designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation under the new National Security Act. This significant move comes in response to the IRGC’s involvement in activities that threaten lives and intimidate individuals on UK soil.
The proscription means that any support or assistance to the IRGC or the Iranian-backed Islamic Movement of Companions of the Right (IMCR) is now a criminal offence, punishable by up to 14 years in prison. This includes expressing support or engaging in activities that could materially assist these groups.
The IRGC plays a crucial role in Iran’s security framework, operating beyond traditional military functions to include intelligence operations and influence projection. This designation reflects the UK’s commitment to countering foreign threats and protecting national security.
Home Office minister Angela Eagle stated that the decision was based on a reasonable belief that these groups pose a significant threat to the UK. The implications of this designation extend to potential future actions against other foreign entities, including the Russian military intelligence unit, the GRU, pending parliamentary approval.
