UK Fridges Struggle as Heatwaves Intensify

As the UK faces increasingly severe heatwaves, older fridges are failing to keep up, leading to empty supermarket shelves and rising repair demands. Experts warn that many domestic and commercial refrigeration units were designed for a cooler climate, typically operating efficiently only up to 32°C. With temperatures now exceeding this threshold, fridges are struggling, causing breakdowns and increased energy costs.

In Somerset, reports of malfunctioning fridges have surged, with engineers noting a spike in repair calls. Shoppers have witnessed empty fridges in stores, prompting concerns about food safety and availability. The British Frozen Food Federation highlights that freezers are also affected, as they cannot expel hot air effectively in extreme conditions.

While some supermarkets are beginning to invest in fridges capable of handling higher temperatures, the transition is slow and costly. Many older units, which have a lifespan of around 20 years, cannot be replaced overnight due to financial constraints. This situation raises questions about the preparedness of the food industry for future climate challenges.

As heatwaves become more frequent, the implications for food storage and safety are significant. Consumers may need to adapt to potential shortages and higher prices as the industry grapples with these ongoing challenges.
