UK Launches New Agency to Combat Disinformation Threats

The UK government is establishing the National Centre for Information Defence to counter disinformation and deepfakes from hostile states, particularly Russia. This initiative aims to protect British interests by detecting, attributing, and disrupting foreign information attacks, which are increasingly enabled by artificial intelligence.

Andy Burnham, in his address to the UN, highlighted the urgent need for the UK to bolster its defenses against these insidious campaigns that distort public perception and create division. He emphasized that vulnerable populations, such as those struggling with the cost of living or young people not in education or employment, are particularly susceptible to manipulation.

The centre will collaborate with intelligence agencies, law enforcement, and social media platforms to enhance national resilience. By educating communities on identifying disinformation, the government hopes to prevent a skewed narrative about the UK from taking root.

Burnham also pointed out that Russia spends approximately £1.3 billion annually on information manipulation, using various tactics to spread false narratives. As the UK prepares for future elections, sharing its experiences with other nations facing similar threats will be crucial for collective security and resilience.
