UK’s High-Speed Rail Costs Expose Infrastructure Failures

A recent report highlights the staggering costs of the UK’s high-speed rail projects, revealing that the UK spends nearly ten times more than Japan on similar infrastructure. The first phase of the HS2 project has cost an astonishing £470 million per route-kilometre, while Japan’s Shinkansen extensions cost between £50 million and £100 million per kilometre, even in challenging terrains.

This disparity raises concerns about the efficiency of the UK’s planning and procurement systems, which critics argue favour blockers over builders. The lengthy approval processes in the UK can take up to 17 years, compared to just three to six years in Japan, significantly delaying essential infrastructure development.

The report also points out that while cities in France boast extensive public transport systems, only a limited number of British towns have similar facilities. For instance, only 38% of Leeds residents can reach the city centre by public transport within 30 minutes, compared to 87% in Marseille.

With the cancellation of key HS2 segments and ongoing delays in projects like Leeds’ tram network, the UK risks falling further behind its European counterparts. If the UK had matched the efficiency of other developed nations, it could have saved £42 billion, funds that could have been redirected to critical areas such as defence.
