UN Cuts Food Aid in West Bank Amid Funding Crisis

The UN World Food Program (WFP) has announced a significant reduction in food assistance in the West Bank, slashing aid from 400,000 to 200,000 people due to severe funding shortages. This decision highlights the growing humanitarian crisis as economic conditions worsen, exacerbated by increased violence and displacement in the region.

The WFP urgently requires an additional $386 million over the next six months to support an estimated 2 million food-insecure individuals across Gaza and the West Bank. With food needs doubling since the beginning of the year, the agency is now forced to prioritize the most vulnerable households, leaving many without necessary support.

In Gaza, the situation is equally dire, with cash assistance already reduced by 40% for 375,000 people. The ongoing economic downturn, coupled with rising food prices and limited access to agricultural land, has left families struggling to afford basic nutrition. Reports indicate that one in five families in Gaza is surviving on just one meal a day.

As the WFP scales back its operations, the implications for food security in both the West Bank and Gaza are alarming. Without immediate funding, further cuts are inevitable, threatening the livelihoods of countless families already facing severe hardship.
