UN Increases Aid Appeal for Lebanon Amid Ongoing Crisis

The United Nations has significantly raised its aid appeal for Lebanon, now seeking nearly $640 million to address a humanitarian crisis exacerbated by ongoing conflict with Israel. This marks a doubling of the initial request made in March, highlighting the escalating needs as the situation deteriorates further.

As military operations intensify, the humanitarian toll is staggering, with over 3,500 reported deaths and more than a million people displaced. The UN’s humanitarian agency, OCHA, warns that essential services are under severe strain, with many communities facing repeated displacements and limited shelter options.

The conflict has also severely impacted Lebanon’s healthcare system, leading to the closure of numerous hospitals and the loss of over 100 paramedics. The economic fallout from the war has driven up fuel and electricity prices, compounding the challenges faced by the population.

Education is suffering too, with nearly 450 schools now serving as shelters for displaced families, resulting in increased dropout rates and learning disruptions. The UN’s call for additional funds underscores the urgent need for international support to alleviate the growing humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.
