Understanding the EU’s Approach to Technological Sovereignty

The EU’s digital chief, Henna Virkkunen, has clarified that the concept of “technological sovereignty” is not about isolation but rather about building resilience in critical sectors. This means reducing reliance on single companies or solutions while still engaging with global partners. For UK businesses, this could signal a shift in how they approach collaborations with European firms, especially in tech sectors.

Virkkunen emphasised the importance of developing local capabilities, particularly in semiconductor supply chains and cloud services. This focus on homegrown technologies may lead to increased public procurement contracts directed towards European vendors, which could affect UK companies looking to compete in these markets.

As the EU seeks to strengthen its position in the global tech landscape, UK firms may need to adapt their strategies. This could involve diversifying partnerships and investing in local capabilities to align with EU policies that prioritise technological independence.

In the long run, this approach may reshape the competitive landscape for technology in Europe, impacting how UK businesses operate and collaborate internationally. Understanding these shifts will be crucial for UK firms aiming to maintain their foothold in the evolving tech ecosystem.
