Understanding the Gender Disparity in Heatwave Deaths

Recent studies reveal a troubling trend: more women are dying from heatwaves than men, particularly highlighted during Europe’s record-breaking summer of 2022. While some attribute this to biological factors, researchers argue that the primary causes are social and environmental conditions. Women often face greater exposure to heat stress in their workplaces, such as in agriculture and garment factories, where they work longer hours under harsher conditions without adequate breaks.

The Robert Koch Institute’s data from Germany indicates that the higher death toll among women is largely due to their representation in older age groups. This suggests that the disparity is not solely physiological; rather, it reflects broader societal issues, including the types of jobs women hold and their access to rest and recovery during extreme heat.

Moreover, the perception that women are inherently more vulnerable to heat is misleading. Studies show that factors like age, body size, and fitness play a more significant role in heat resilience than biological sex. For instance, women can effectively manage heat through physiological adaptations, such as improved blood flow to the skin, which aids in cooling.

This situation underscores the need for targeted interventions that address the unique challenges women face in extreme heat, particularly in the workplace. Recognising these disparities can lead to better health outcomes and more equitable working conditions, ultimately saving lives during heatwaves.
