Understanding the Signs of Social Media Addiction in Children

With the impending ban on social media for under-16s set for spring 2027, parents are increasingly concerned about their children’s relationship with technology. The uproar from children, including a viral response from a Lancashire schoolgirl who said she’d ‘stare at a wall’ without social media, highlights the deep-seated attachment many have developed. This reaction raises questions about the potential addiction to platforms like TikTok and Instagram.

Experts from UK Addiction Treatment (UKAT) report a rise in young people seeking help for social media addiction, indicating that the issue is more serious than mere teenage behaviour. Signs of addiction include agitation when separated from devices, difficulty concentrating, and even physical symptoms like headaches and worsening eyesight. These behaviours can often be misinterpreted as typical adolescent mood swings.

As the ban approaches, parents should be vigilant and proactive. The withdrawal symptoms that may arise could manifest as mood changes and increased irritability. This period will be crucial for parents to support their children through the transition, helping them adapt to life without constant social media engagement.

Ultimately, the ban could serve as an opportunity for families to reconnect and encourage healthier habits. By recognising the signs of addiction, parents can take steps to mitigate the negative impacts of social media, fostering a more balanced lifestyle for their children.
