Undiagnosed Hypertension Poses Major Health Risks in England

A recent study reveals that millions in England are unaware they have high blood pressure, often referred to as a ‘silent killer’. Researchers found that 59% of those with hypertension are undiagnosed, significantly increasing their risk of serious health issues like strokes and heart attacks.

The study, which analysed data from 1.4 million adults, indicates that only half of those receiving treatment have their blood pressure under control. This raises concerns about the effectiveness of current healthcare strategies in managing hypertension, especially as the prevalence of the condition has plateaued since 2011.

The findings suggest that the healthcare system may need to adopt new approaches to better identify and treat individuals at risk. Factors such as lifestyle choices and medication adherence complicate management, highlighting the need for tailored treatment plans.

Experts stress the importance of improving detection methods and treatment strategies to prevent avoidable cardiovascular events. Addressing these issues could save thousands of lives and reduce the burden on the healthcare system.
