UNICEF Report Reveals Alarming Online Abuse Rates Among Children

A recent UNICEF report highlights a staggering issue: approximately 20 million children globally face online sexual abuse each year. This figure represents more than one in five children aged 12 to 17 across various regions, including Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. The report underscores the significant role social media plays, with over 60% of abuse cases occurring on platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.

The findings reveal a troubling trend where many children do not report their experiences, with less than 1% of incidents reaching authorities. This lack of reporting stems from a combination of fear, stigma, and a belief that there are no effective channels for help. As a result, many children suffer in silence, often unaware that they are victims of abuse.

The emotional and psychological impacts of such abuse are profound. Children exposed to online exploitation are four times more likely to experience suicidal thoughts and self-harm. The report indicates that the repercussions extend beyond the digital realm, affecting children’s daily lives, education, and relationships.

UNICEF calls for urgent action from governments and technology companies to create safer online environments. The responsibility to protect children must be prioritised, as the current systems are failing to address the complexities of online abuse effectively.
