Households in England and Wales can now access grants of up to £2,500 for air conditioning units through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS). This initiative, which has recently expanded to include air-to-air heat pumps, aims to provide financial support during a summer marked by extreme heat, with temperatures soaring to 35 degrees Celsius in some areas.
The significance of this scheme lies in its dual functionality; these heat pumps not only cool homes in the summer but also provide heating in winter, making them a versatile solution for year-round climate control. This is particularly beneficial for those living in smaller homes or flats that lack central heating, as highlighted by Energy Minister Martin McCluskey.
However, eligibility is limited to homeowners transitioning from fossil fuel heating systems, excluding new builds and social housing. This could lead to a shift in consumer behaviour, as more families consider energy-efficient options amidst rising temperatures and energy costs.
As demand for air conditioning rises, with reports of shortages and price hikes, this grant could alleviate financial burdens for many. Homeowners are encouraged to consult MCS certified installers to explore their options and secure funding, potentially making air conditioning more accessible than ever before.
