Urgent Meningitis Vaccination Drive for University Freshers

As thousands of students head to university this week, a mass vaccination campaign against meningitis B is underway, with nearly 250,000 doses administered this summer. This initiative comes in response to recent outbreaks, particularly one in Kent that resulted in three fatalities. Health experts warn that first-year students are at a significantly higher risk, with symptoms often mistaken for common ailments like hangovers or ‘freshers’ flu’.

The symptoms of meningitis can escalate quickly, and students are urged to be vigilant. Early signs such as severe headaches, fever, and confusion should prompt immediate medical attention. The NHS stresses the importance of completing the two-dose vaccination schedule, especially as students may overlook their health amidst the chaos of settling into university life.

With the first dose available until December 31, students born between September 1, 2007, and August 31, 2008, are encouraged to get vaccinated. Those who received their first dose this summer should schedule their second dose before the academic year becomes hectic.

This vaccination drive not only aims to protect individual students but also to prevent potential outbreaks that could disrupt university life and pose serious health risks. As the new term begins, awareness and proactive health measures are crucial for safeguarding the student community.
