US-Saudi Nuclear Deal Faces Uncertain Future

The proposed nuclear cooperation deal between the US and Saudi Arabia, aimed at establishing a civilian nuclear programme in the kingdom, is now in jeopardy. This deal, which would facilitate the transfer of US technology to help Saudi Arabia meet its growing energy demands, has been complicated by former President Trump’s condition tying it to Saudi normalisation with Israel. Riyadh has historically maintained that it will not recognise Israel without progress towards Palestinian statehood, a stance that could derail the agreement.

If the deal collapses, Saudi Arabia may pivot towards other nations with nuclear capabilities, such as China or Russia. This shift could not only diversify Saudi energy partnerships but also spark geopolitical tensions, particularly regarding nuclear proliferation in a region already fraught with conflict. Furthermore, if the deal goes through, Saudi Arabia will face significant challenges in establishing a civilian nuclear industry, including sourcing nuclear fuel and adhering to international oversight standards.

The situation underscores the delicate balance of diplomacy in the Middle East, where energy needs intersect with complex political realities. As the deal awaits Congressional review, its fate remains uncertain, highlighting the potential for both economic and strategic implications for Saudi Arabia and its relationships with global powers.

The outcome will also influence how Riyadh approaches its energy strategy in the face of rising domestic consumption and the need for sustainable energy solutions, making it crucial for both Saudi and US interests in the long run.
