Venezuela’s Oil Exports Surge to US Refineries

Venezuela is now sending over 500,000 barrels of oil per day to US refineries, a significant increase from previous levels. This shift comes as the US has taken a more active role in Venezuela’s oil production, following the removal of President Nicolas Maduro. The Gulf Coast refineries are particularly suited to process Venezuela’s heavy, sour crude, making this partnership beneficial for both nations.

The US is not only importing more oil but is also supplying Venezuela with naphtha to enhance production capabilities. This arrangement has been described as a “beautiful energy partnership,” indicating a mutual economic benefit that could reshape energy dynamics in the region.

Venezuela’s state oil company, PDVSA, aims to further increase output, with plans to modernise and expand its refineries. This could lead to a more stable oil supply, which has been hampered by years of underinvestment and sanctions. The potential for increased production could also impact global oil prices and supply chains.

However, the arrangement raises questions about transparency and governance in Venezuela. The US has not disclosed how much revenue it has generated from these oil sales or how it is being used, leading to concerns about the entrenchment of a corrupt regime without accountability. As Venezuela seeks to reform its energy sector, the implications for both countries could be profound.
