Veterans Demand Justice Through Proposed Tribunal

Campaigners for Britain’s Nuclear Test Veterans are urging Prime Minister Andy Burnham to establish a special tribunal to address the injustices faced by those who participated in nuclear tests from 1952 to 1991. Many veterans and their families have suffered serious health issues due to radiation exposure, yet the UK remains the only testing nation without compensation for its veterans.

The proposed tribunal aims to provide a platform for veterans to share their experiences and seek reparations. It is designed to be judge-led, ensuring an independent inquiry that could finally acknowledge the suffering endured by these individuals. The urgency of the tribunal is underscored by the declining number of veterans able to testify, with campaigners pushing for it to commence by early 2027.

This initiative follows a recent review of veterans’ medical records, which revealed significant gaps and issues stemming from Cold War secrecy. The lack of a unified record-keeping system has complicated efforts to address veterans’ health concerns, leading to calls for immediate action from the government.

As the UK government faces pressure to align with other nations that have compensated their nuclear test veterans, the establishment of this tribunal could mark a significant step towards justice and recognition for those who served. The campaigners emphasize that the time for action is now, as many veterans may not be around to witness the outcomes of prolonged inquiries.
