Victim Urges Government to Halt Early Release of Child Abuser

Steve Lewsey, a victim of child sex offender Glenn Langrish, is advocating for changes to the Sentencing Act to prevent early release for serious offenders. Langrish, who was sentenced to 15 years in 2024 for multiple historic offences, could be eligible for early release under a paused government scheme. Lewsey argues that allowing such a release would undermine the suffering of victims like himself, who feel they are serving a life sentence due to the trauma inflicted upon them.

The early release scheme, initially proposed to alleviate prison overcrowding, has faced backlash from victims and the public. Justice Secretary Alex Norris has acknowledged the concerns and paused the scheme pending a review, stating that victims’ views must be central to any decisions made. This pause reflects a growing recognition of the need to balance prison capacity with the rights and feelings of victims.

Lewsey’s call to action includes writing to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, urging him to ensure that serious offenders are never released early. His personal story highlights the broader implications of the justice system’s approach to handling serious crimes, particularly those involving vulnerable individuals.

As discussions continue, the outcome of this review could significantly impact future sentencing policies and the treatment of victims in the justice system, potentially reshaping public trust in legal processes surrounding serious offences.
