Viking Ship Owners Demand Payment from Universal for Film Damage

The owners of the Viking longship replica, Glad av Gillberga, are facing a financial strain after allegedly sustaining damage during its use in the film The Odyssey. Despite Universal’s reported promise to cover repair costs, the Swedish nonprofit Vikingaleden claims it has not received the $6,000 needed for materials, leaving them feeling overlooked.

This situation highlights a broader issue within the film industry regarding the treatment of smaller entities involved in major productions. While Universal rakes in substantial profits, the nonprofit’s limited budget means that even a small amount like $6,000 can significantly impact their operations and community projects.

The Vikingaleden association, which operates the ship and a museum, emphasizes that they only sought reimbursement for materials, not labour, showcasing their commitment to preserving Viking heritage. The delay in payment raises questions about the accountability of large studios to their partners, especially when they profit immensely from the projects.

As the film continues to perform well at the box office, the unresolved payment issue serves as a reminder of the potential vulnerabilities faced by smaller organisations in the creative sector, and the importance of honouring agreements to foster goodwill and collaboration in future projects.
