Wales’ GCSE Reforms: A Shift Towards Continuous Assessment

Starting in September 2025, Wales will introduce significant changes to its GCSE system, moving towards a model that emphasises continuous assessment rather than solely relying on final exams. This shift aims to provide a more rounded education experience, focusing on skills and knowledge gained throughout the course.

New subjects like film and digital media, alongside a combined English and Welsh qualification, will be introduced, reflecting a broader curriculum. However, the plan to eliminate separate science GCSEs has been postponed, indicating a cautious approach to reform.

The Welsh Baccalaureate will be phased out, with new vocational qualifications set to launch in 2027. These changes are designed to align with the new curriculum, which prioritises experiential learning.

Despite excitement among educators, concerns about the impact on student wellbeing and the feasibility of these reforms amid budget constraints persist. As Wales navigates these changes, the implications for students’ future qualifications and employability remain a critical focus.
