New Weight Restrictions on Vauxhall Bridge Impact HGV Traffic

Starting today, Vauxhall Bridge has implemented a weight restriction limiting heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) to 18 tonnes. This change affects around 200 vehicles daily, forcing them to take alternative routes across the Thames. While the bridge remains open for most traffic, the restriction aims to prevent further structural damage following recent inspections that revealed deterioration in key components.

Transport for London (TfL) announced the temporary measure as a precautionary step, ensuring the bridge’s safety while longer-term solutions are developed. Although the majority of daily traffic will not be impacted, the diversion routes for HGVs could lead to increased congestion on alternative crossings, affecting delivery schedules and transport logistics in the area.

Buses and emergency vehicles are exempt from the new restrictions, allowing essential services to continue operating without disruption. TfL has established signed diversion routes for affected vehicles, which will be monitored closely as engineers work on a comprehensive plan for the bridge’s future.

This weight limit is not entirely new, as vehicles classified as abnormal loads have been prohibited since earlier this year. The bridge, which carries approximately 39,500 vehicles daily, is crucial for connectivity between Vauxhall and Pimlico, making these restrictions a significant consideration for local transport dynamics.
