Wild Stag Put Down After Picnic Attack in Richmond Park

A stag has been euthanised following an attack on a man in his sixties during a picnic in Richmond Park. The incident occurred when the stag approached a group, likely seeking food, leading to a confrontation that resulted in chest injuries for the man. Fortunately, his injuries were not life-threatening, but the attack raised serious concerns about wildlife behaviour in urban parks.

Royal Parks officials have reiterated the importance of maintaining a safe distance from deer, advising visitors to stay at least 50 metres away. Feeding deer is illegal and can lead to dangerous situations, as it encourages them to lose their natural wariness of humans. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential risks associated with human interaction with wildlife.

The park is home to over 630 red and fallow deer, which have been roaming freely since the 17th century. Recent warnings from park management highlight the dangers of encouraging children to feed or pet these powerful animals, which can react aggressively if they feel threatened. Such behaviour not only endangers visitors but also stresses the animals, leading to unpredictable actions.

As urban wildlife encounters become more common, this incident underscores the need for public awareness regarding the proper conduct around wild animals. Ensuring that visitors respect wildlife boundaries is crucial for the safety of both people and animals in Richmond Park and beyond.
