Wildfire Threatens Popular Greek Island Amid Evacuations

A major wildfire on the Greek island of Paros has prompted urgent evacuations as it continues to rage for a second day. Firefighting crews are battling multiple fronts, particularly on the southern and southeastern sides of the island, which is a popular tourist destination. The situation escalated overnight, leading authorities to issue evacuation orders for ten areas, highlighting the fire’s rapid spread fueled by strong northerly winds.

The fire initially ignited near a landfill site, consuming rubbish and dry vegetation before quickly advancing through farmland and rugged terrain. Despite efforts to contain the blaze, it rekindled after aerial operations were halted for the night. Local media reported significant damage, including the destruction of livestock facilities, as residents faced power cuts and were urged to leave their homes for safety.

Firefighting efforts have been bolstered with reinforcements from nearby regions, including 66 firefighters and several aircraft. The rugged landscape complicates ground access, making aerial support crucial. As the winds are expected to strengthen, the risk of new outbreaks remains high, with Paros classified under a severe wildfire risk category.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, with the Cyclades Arson Crime Investigation Unit activated. The ongoing situation serves as a stark reminder of the increasing wildfire risks in the region, particularly during the summer months when dry conditions prevail, impacting both local communities and tourism.
