A 36-year-old worker suffered severe injuries after a 500kg pillar drill fell on him while he was assisting in its relocation. The incident occurred at the Enfield Industrial Estate in Redditch, where the employee was using a forklift truck. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) launched an investigation and found that The Micro Spring and Presswork Company Limited failed to conduct a proper risk assessment for the lifting operation. The company admitted to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act, highlighting a lack of adequate planning and supervision during the operation.
As a result of the investigation, the company was fined £40,000 and ordered to pay additional costs. This case underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations and ensuring that all lifting operations are managed by qualified personnel to prevent similar incidents in the future.
HSE inspector Charlie Rowe emphasized that such accidents are entirely preventable and urged employers to prioritise safety measures.
