Why Your First Night in a Hotel Can Disrupt Sleep

Many travellers experience a phenomenon known as the ‘first-night effect,’ which can significantly impact sleep quality. This effect causes individuals to take longer to fall asleep and wake up more frequently during their first night in a new environment. Sleep specialists suggest this may be an evolutionary response, where the brain remains alert in unfamiliar surroundings, making it harder to achieve deep sleep.

Research indicates that on average, people sleep about 20 to 30 minutes less in new settings. Factors such as age and anxiety levels can exacerbate this effect, with children and older adults being particularly affected. Interestingly, those who are more anxious may find themselves trapped in a cycle of worry that further disrupts their sleep.

To combat the first-night effect, experts recommend establishing good sleep hygiene practices before travelling. This includes maintaining a consistent bedtime routine and creating a comfortable sleep environment. Bringing familiar items, like a favourite pillow, can also help ease the transition into a new space.

Ultimately, while the first-night effect is common, it’s manageable. Arriving a day early for important events can help acclimatise to the new environment, ensuring a better night’s sleep when it matters most.
