New youth hubs in Cornwall are making a significant impact on young people’s employment prospects. Established to assist those aged 16 to 24 who are not in education, employment, or training (NEETs), these centres have already helped dozens find jobs and gain valuable skills.
The hubs provide tailored support, including mentoring and advice, which has proven crucial for young individuals like Charlotte Allen-Squire and Wouter Le Roux. Both have expressed how the hubs have revitalised their job searches, offering guidance and opportunities they previously lacked.
With around 13,000 NEETs in Cornwall, the hubs aim to reduce this number significantly. The council’s goal is to help 30% of those they assist into work or further education, which could lead to broader economic benefits as these young people transition off benefits and contribute to the local economy.
This initiative, funded by the Department for Work and Pensions, represents a shift towards more personalised approaches in youth employment services. The success of these hubs could pave the way for similar projects across the UK, addressing the pressing issue of youth unemployment in a more effective manner.
