Zambia’s Election: Incumbent Leads Amid Allegations of Violence

Zambia’s incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema is on track for a potential outright victory in the recent general election, having secured nearly 59% of the votes counted so far. However, the election process has been marred by serious allegations of violence and unfair practices, raising concerns about the integrity of the results.

The opposition National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) claims that armed personnel, allegedly from the Zambian army, raided the home of their candidate, Brian Mundubile, during the election period. This incident reportedly involved live ammunition and resulted in injuries, further complicating an already tense electoral atmosphere.

International observers have noted significant biases in the campaign, particularly in state media coverage favouring Hichilema. The European Union’s monitoring mission highlighted that the election was competitive but skewed, with reports of violence against polling staff and irregularities in vote counting.

As Zambia has a history of peaceful power transitions since 1991, the current situation poses a risk to this stability. With over 70% of the population living on less than $3 a day, the outcome of this election could have profound implications for the country’s economic future and social cohesion.
