Zambia’s Elections: Economic Struggles and Reform Accountability

Zambia’s upcoming elections on August 13 are pivotal, as they will assess the government’s economic reforms amid ongoing hardships. With inflation at 6.8% and high costs for essentials, voters are questioning whether these reforms have improved their daily lives. The ruling United Party for National Development, led by Hakainde Hichilema, faces scrutiny over its ability to translate macroeconomic stability into tangible benefits for citizens.

The mining sector, particularly copper, plays a crucial role in Zambia’s economy, contributing significantly to export earnings. However, voters are concerned about how much of the revenue from copper production reaches local communities. The government aims to boost copper output, but the real test lies in whether this wealth translates into job security and improved public services for ordinary Zambians.

Debt restructuring has been a notable achievement for Hichilema’s administration, enhancing Zambia’s international standing. Yet, analysts warn that this does not automatically lead to better living standards. The gap between economic recovery and the everyday experiences of citizens could heavily influence voter sentiment.

As Zambians head to the polls, the focus will be on practical solutions to economic challenges. Candidates must address the needs of the 60% of the population living below the poverty line, ensuring that campaign promises lead to real change in the lives of their constituents.
