Zambia’s Presidential Election: A Crucial Test for Economic Reforms

Zambia’s presidential election is underway, with incumbent Hakainde Hichilema seeking a second term amid significant economic challenges. The election is seen as a critical test of Hichilema’s reforms aimed at alleviating widespread economic frustration, particularly concerning the rising cost of living. Despite recent improvements, such as a decrease in inflation to 6.8% and a stronger kwacha, many citizens still struggle with high food and energy prices.

Over 70% of Zambians live on less than $3 a day, highlighting the urgency of economic issues in this election. Hichilema, who won the presidency in 2021, is focusing on job creation and infrastructure development to secure his position. His main challenger, Brian Mundubile, has raised concerns about the fairness of the election, claiming that restrictions on his party’s campaign have undermined the democratic process.

As voters head to the polls, they will also elect candidates for 226 parliamentary seats, reflecting a shift towards greater representation. The outcome of this election could have long-lasting implications for Zambia’s political landscape and economic recovery, especially if a divided electorate leads to a contentious result.

With results expected by August 17, the stakes are high for both Hichilema and Mundubile. A victory for the opposition could signal a significant shift in Zambian politics, prompting a ‘national reset’ and potentially altering the course of the country’s future.
