As temperatures soar above 30°C in Suffolk, students at Debenham High School express a strong desire to remain in school rather than face the heat at home. With an amber weather warning in place, many find their classrooms cooler, thanks to air conditioning, allowing them to focus on lessons without the distraction of extreme heat.

Head girl Jessica highlights the importance of staying hydrated and following school guidelines to avoid heat-related illnesses. The school has adapted by relaxing uniform rules and relocating classes to cooler rooms, ensuring students can continue their education without interruption.

Headteacher Simon Martin notes that in his nearly 30 years of teaching, he has never had to close a school due to heat. He believes keeping students in school is beneficial, as many homes lack adequate cooling. The school is also mindful of students who may struggle more in the heat, providing necessary support.

While some schools, like Cedarwood Primary, have closed due to the heat, Debenham High remains open, demonstrating a proactive approach to managing the challenges posed by extreme weather. The ongoing heatwave raises questions about the adequacy of current regulations regarding school operations during such conditions.
