Trump’s Shift on Turkiye: Sanctions Lifted and F-35 Sales Considered

In a significant policy shift, President Trump announced plans to lift sanctions on Turkiye and consider resuming F-35 fighter jet sales. This comes during a meeting with Turkish President Erdogan at a NATO summit, marking a potential thaw in US-Turkiye relations after years of tension stemming from Ankara’s acquisition of Russian S-400 systems.

The sanctions, imposed under the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act, specifically targeted Turkiye’s defence industries, creating barriers to US military technology. Lifting these sanctions could open the door for increased military cooperation and trade between the two nations, impacting regional security dynamics.

However, this pivot raises concerns among US allies, particularly Israel, which fears that F-35 sales to Turkiye could disrupt the military balance in the Middle East. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has voiced strong opposition, warning that such a move could undermine Israeli air superiority in the region.

As the Trump administration navigates these complex geopolitical waters, the response from US lawmakers remains uncertain. While some, like Senator Lindsey Graham, express openness to the idea, the potential for pushback highlights the delicate balance of interests at play in US foreign policy.
