A ferry fire near Madura, Indonesia, has resulted in at least five confirmed deaths and 41 individuals reported missing. The vessel, carrying 271 passengers and crew from Surabaya to Makassar, caught fire under unclear circumstances, prompting a swift response from search and rescue teams.

By Sunday afternoon, 225 people had been rescued, with some jumping overboard to escape the flames. Nearby vessels were on standby but could not approach due to the risk of flammable materials on board. The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation has prioritised the safety of those still unaccounted for.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about maritime safety in Indonesia, an archipelago prone to such disasters. The country has faced multiple ferry accidents, often attributed to unpredictable weather and inadequate safety regulations.

As rescue operations continue, the focus remains on locating the missing individuals and understanding the cause of the fire. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in Indonesia’s maritime transport system, raising questions about future safety measures and regulations.
