New Smart Tag Technology Aims to Combat E-Bike Crime

Police forces across the UK are adopting a new ‘Smart Tag’ technology to tackle the rising issue of illegal e-bike and e-scooter use. This innovative system allows officers to spray a forensic solution that links individuals and vehicles to crime scenes from a distance of up to 10 metres. The solution is invisible to the naked eye but can be detected under UV light, revealing a unique forensic code that connects suspects to specific incidents.

The introduction of Smart Tags is significant as it provides a safer alternative for police officers, reducing the need for direct confrontation with offenders. This technology is already in use by several police forces, including Greater Manchester and North Wales, and is expected to enhance evidence collection in cases involving vehicles used in criminal activities.

As the use of e-bikes and e-scooters continues to grow, so do concerns about their illegal operation on public roads and pavements. The Smart Tag system aims to address these issues by allowing law enforcement to track offenders more effectively, thereby improving public safety and reducing crime rates associated with these vehicles.

In a landscape where traditional apprehension methods may escalate risks, Smart Tags represent a forward-thinking approach to policing. This technology not only aids in immediate crime prevention but also sets a precedent for future innovations in law enforcement practices, potentially reshaping how police engage with emerging transport technologies.
